Head For Threads - September 2008

It's Dior darling, it's Dior

Galliano for Dior 2

Short and sheer was the theme of Christian Dior's spring collection at Paris Fashion Week earlier today.

Designer John Galliano teamed soft, floating skirts in vibrant colours and prints with solid upper-body elements such as tight fitting bodices, belts, and heavy jackets.

But it was the elaborate up-do's that almost stole the show, adding unnecessary height to women who already possess legs like flagpoles and necks like giraffes.

The highlight of the collection would have to be the silvery-grey evening gown with its billowing layers of chiffon (seen below), though why the make-up artists insisted on teaming such a beautiful dress with gothic makeup I will never know - surely a softer, more glamourous look would have been more appropriate?

There's really nothing left to say except that if these styles take off over the Australian summer, Aussie women everywhere will have to whip out their nicest knickers, and be super vigilant with the-hair-down-there...

Falling for Prada

September 24th 2008 00:28
Poor models. Sometimes I really think designers have it in for them.

First, they're zipped into creations so tight that taking a decent step is impossible. But then they're strapped into skyscraper stilettos, and expected to just glide down a runway with effortless poise.

And oh how we plebs chuckle when they stuff it up.

Take a look at this video of the Prada show at Milan Fashion Week that was posted on the New York Times blog, The Moment here

Poor little Miss Gold Lame tries desperately to maintain her balance, but in the end gives up and feebly totters off the runway. I can't help feeling a little sorry for her.

Then there's this one...
Prada

I'm not sure if she actually bit the dust or not, but she still looks remarkably calm. Nothing like how I'd imagine myself in the same situation (face aghast, arms flailing).

But when you're paid thousands of dollars to strut down a walkway a few times over a 40 minute spread, I expect you don't really care too much.

Stella McCartney does acrobatics

September 17th 2008 03:25
I'm fairly sure that when most journalists and photographers arrive at a fashion show they expect to see the models stalk haughtily down the catwalk, not bouncing through the air or backflipping on a beam.

But Stella McCartney had a little surprise for the crowd at the launch of her spring collection for Adidas - her models were olympic medallists and well-known athletes.

But it made for some fantastic shots which you can see here

If only all fashion shows were so athletically three dimensional....

Is that a skirt or a cake?

September 10th 2008 06:26
Her bio says she's been designing clothes for roughly four decades, but the collection of clothes Betsey Johnson sent down the catwalk at New York Fashion Week this week suggests she might still be stuck in a children's fairytale wonderland.

I'm not sure exactly where Betsey expects a girl like me to wear the gowns you see here- clearly it's somewhere with a large doorway and plenty of open spaces. To the ball perhaps?
