Invisible Bikini

invisible bikini

Noticed an ad at the top of my last post for an "invisible bikini", and just had to investigate.

Apparently the Japanese aren't satisfied with having designed electronics, cars and robots, they've decided to extend themselves and invent the invisible bikini. For the moment they seem to have only the top half figured out: a skin-coloured, waterproof, adhesive top very similar to those self adhesive strapless bras, that from a distance looks for all the world like you are wearing nothing at all.

Click here to watch the video (the quality is not so great, sorry guys).

The point of this? I have no idea. If you want to look like you're wearing nothing, wear nothing. They do it in Europe. I don't understand wearing something that looks like you're wearing nothing. Although I suppose that's the intention of the majority of underwear such as g-strings. But we wear clothes over those! Don't we?

While we're on the topic of invisible bikinis, you should also know there was a 1966 movie called The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini. Clearly the title character wasn't satisfied with being transparent; perhaps the bikini was an added precaution? Directed by Don Weis, and starring Boris Karloff (Frankenstein) and Nancy Sinatra, the film can supposedly be classified as a comedy, a horror flick, and a musical, which is highly intriguing. But then another reviewer described it as just another 60's "beach movie". The trailer is below.

If you need any further clues about the quality of the film, take the words of Karloff himself:

"My wife is a woman of very great taste. That's why she has never seen any of my films."

But then, the man had five wives.

Bikini boost

There is nothing new about the itty bitty bikini.

The picture above is part of a series of mosaics depicting bikini clad women which appears on the walls at the Villa Romana del Casale, in Sicily, Italy, which is believed to have been built around the fourth century A.D. The mosaics - which have been called the richest, largest and most complex collection of Roman mosaics in the world - were not discovered until the 19th century. The site is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though bikinis themselves may not be new, Australian Swimwear brand Bond-eye has supposedly improved them for the modern era - by introducing a "Shape Enhancing" fabric which it says has a "supoerior [sic] and tighter knit" combined with an increased Elastane content and "unique garment construction".

The website says the fabric "creates a more supportive and shape enhancing swimsuit". The accompanying pictures would have you believe that no matter your size, you too can look like a bronzed, leggy, size eight model with washboard abs and perky breasts - there are no plus-size models here to demonstrate the incredible shape enhancement on offer.

The fact is that, like all swimsuits, Bond-eye's shape enhancing range will most likely do the same as every other swimsuit in existence: cling to every curve, lump and, in the words of Kath Day-Knight: "foo-doo-ba-da". The swimwear world is yet to design a suction swimsuit, and one imagines that even if they did, it wouldn't be particularly easy on the eye.

To see the full Bond Eye range visit www.bond-eye.com.au

If you decide you want one, you can order online at aussieswimstore.com. Prices range from around $60-80 for a top, and $50 for bikini bottoms.

Or you could ignore their advertising spiel altogether and realise that with or without shape enhancers, pulling on a bikini people means people are going to see almost all of your body anyway. And if you are ok with that, then everyone else should be too.

Gucci Gucci Gumboots

Gucci Prato

I don't believe it: Gucci does gumboots. I was having a look at their online shoe catalogue, wondering why - after years of trying to feminise our feet as much as possible with pedicures and nail polish - women are so preoccupied with strapping their feet into platformed gladiator-esque monstrosities this season. Feminine feet wrapped and tied with a thick, black leather, studded bow.

Anyway, while perusing, I came across these beauties and had to stifle a laugh. Part of the fall/winter 2009 collection, the 'Prato' boots come in a range of colours, but I think the white would be my favourite, simply because it is the most impractical colour imaginable for a shoe originally designed to withstand muddy puddles.

Note: I'm not entirely sure that the above image is kosher. In the pictures in the Gucci catalogue, the ivory boots are lined with ivory fluff, not black. Buyers beware.

The website selling the boots above is charging US$399, another site - which has only the black variety - is charging $453. Prices aren't listed in the Gucci catalogue - which generally means they are hefty. As they say: "If you have to ask, you can't afford it."

Fascinator? NO!

October 17th 2008 04:44

The Victorian Spring Racing Carnival kicked off last weekend with Caulfield Guineas Day, and I have to say, I'm already alarmed at the number of women who still insist on wearing fascinators.

Sportsgirl website

Just had a look at the updated Sportsgirl site and it is fantastic.

You can look at all the clothing, footwear, accessories and beauty products currently on the shelves, see what other items would go with them and order it all online; find out more about the latest designers contributing to the Sportsgirl range; learn about and get involved in the work of The Butterfly Foundation; and read reviews of the brand's "Album of the Month".

Gareth Pugh's period mish mash

October 1st 2008 05:11
I don't know how I missed this one.

I'd never heard of British designer Gareth Pugh (pronounced "Pew") until today, but I don't think I'll forget his Spring 09 collection in a hurry.
