Marc Jacobs Autumn/Winter 2009

February 18th 2009 05:30
The economic outlook may be bleak, but the fashion outlook is not, if Marc Jacobs' autumn/winter 2009 collection is anything to go by. Bright colours and boxy shapes were the order of the day, as 60 models strolled down the catwalk during the 10 minute show. It'll be interesting to see if the lurid poncho-capes work their way into the high street shops in time for our winter (heaven forbid)....

Falling again - for New York

Monika Jagaciak

Will someone please tell designers to stop being so unrealistic about footwear?! We acknowledge that you males love a women of Amazonian proportions, 6 foot, forever inches, but please: stop strapping young women into skyscrapers when they clearly do not have enough padding to cushion the fall.

Poor Monika Jagaciak was one of several models to slip or take the full plunge at Max Azria's Herve Leger show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York on the weekend.

Or watch the fall here

This is not the first time designers have reached for the skies; the same happened at the Prada show at Milan Fashion week last year (click here to read about that debacle), and yet they do not learn. Surely they are devastated when the style and elegance of a collection is diminished by a dirty great face-plant? Apparently not: "No, I don't care!" Mr Azria said. "If people talk about that instead of the clothes, that would be ridiculous." Sympathy personified. We are talking about the clothes Mr Azria, or the shoes at least, and how cruel you are to make people wear them. Would love to see you try.

AFP reported that the heels worn during his shows and others ranged between 10 and 18cm. But Mr Azria claimed the falls were due to the floor surface - a shiny dark wood - and not the height of the heels. Tell him he's dreaming.

Designer Con

Footwear giant Converse is taking giant steps towards fighting HIV, AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis in Africa through its 1HUND(RED) Artists range. Converse commissioned 100 artists from around the world including musicians The Edge (U2) and Lupe Fiasco, and artists Jeremyville (Australia) and Andrew Mania (UK) to design shoes for the collection, with ten percent of the net wholesale price of each pair going towards the purchase and distribution of anti-retroviral medicines in Africa. The Andrew Mania design, seen here with supermodel Giselle Bundchen on the latest edition of Hong Kong Elle, reads "This is not a shoe" on one side, and "It's a Mania", on the other.

The range is a result of a one-year partnership between Converse and (RED), a global fund (created by Bono and Bobby Shriver) that partners with some of the world's biggest brands to create (RED) branded products. A portion of the profits from the sale of these products then goes directly to Africa, where it makes a difference to thousands of lives. Brands that have partnered with (RED) so far include American Express, Apple, Emporio Armani, Hallmark, Starbucks and Microsoft. For more information on (RED) visit www.joinred.com. Haute Couture Wrap

February 3rd 2009 00:23
Haute Couture Fashion Week in Paris last week gave the economic downturn a defiant flick of its middle figure, with reems of gorgeous fabrics wrapping themselves around the waify startled-looking models. The only sign of any conservatism was in the colour palettes of some designers - whites, greys, beiges and tans were common, interspersed with the occasional flash of blue or yellow. Christian Lacroix on the other hand couldn't be bothered with the beige, instead prefering a triumphant collage of colours, prints and fabrics with a healthy dose of bold accessories. Valentino offered a highly texturised collection, featuring elaborate scrolls, and beautiful teal and aqua hues. But the standout collection would have to be that of Georges Hobeika with its elaborate ballgowns in rich pastel colours.
