I Get a Dressmaker's Form Tomorrow!!!
September 16th 2006 23:50
I know freecycling groups have been around for much longer than the couple of months I've been dabbling with them, so many of you will know what I'm talking about. Even though freecycling is so much cleaner and more civilized than a good old dumpster dive, it's ok; I still use it when I can.
The other day, it dawned on me that, with all the sewing I do, a dressmaker's form would be a great tool (apparently, I can be a little slow sometimes). A true Eureka! moment, if ever I had one. So, this afternoon I placed a request ad for one and someone a couple of miles away has one that Susie, my sister, will help me pick up tomorrow. Yippee! I won't stick pins in myself anymore!
And what, you may ask, does me getting this ancient, but still ever-so-useful tool have to do with the skirt I've been altering for the past few days? Aside from it making it easier for me to finish the front of the skirt, pretty much nothing. But a goodly part of this blog will be dealing with sewing and the form is a tool for sewing, so there we are. Aside from that, I really wanted to announce my good find.
But, speaking of the skirt, I might as well dive into the progress report. As of yesterday's post, I'd reattached the smaller version of the back to the still too large front. To backtrack, I left the pockets and the zipper where they were but I intensely dislike zippers on the fronts of skirts, so here's where a little creative magic comes to play.
When I tried the skirt on, I had about 7" of extra fabric to work with. I measured 3 1/2" on either side of the center, folded the fabric along the 3 1/2" marks from top to bottom, pinned and basted.
Now, I'm ready to topstitch along the basted lines to make a flap on either side. Then, tomorrow I'll fold each of the topstitched flaps so they meet in the center. The right side will be stitched to the outside of the original zipper flap, the left side will meet it, forming a pleat. Even though the zipper will still be in the front, it won't show.
Peace

Can you tell me a bit more about freecycling? I have lots of stuff at home that is handy for someone but of no ise to me - I would rather pass it on to someone who can use it.
Thanks

At the freecycle groups, some post what they want to get and others post what they have to give away. If you search 'freecycle', you should be able to find a group near to where you live. Good luck to you, too.

I know how to sew very well and really would like to have an adjustable mannaquin for verious sizes, or will I have to buy one for each size. I am really into designing clothes for all sizes I don't want to have to limit myself. Please can someone help me understand so I can order myself one.
Hope to get a reply for what I am looking for.

I'm sorry to tell you that the person who wrote that post doesn't write for this blog anymore - I picked up this domain when they left.
And I don't know the answer to your question, sorry!
