Who Are The Eagles and What's the AFC?

October 1st 2006 05:16
One more thing. While we're at it, who's Norm Smith? If those questions sound like they came from an American who's totally oblivious to most sports, it did.

Generally, after I finish posting over at Living Spiritually, I spend a few minutes checking out what's on the Orbit homepage before coming here.

To give you a little perspective, I'm from Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia, home to the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team. So when I saw Tony K's AFL Central post Eagles win the flag, it naturally caught my eye.

Since I'm not big on sports, I normally wouldn't have given it a second thought except the second thought is what made me click on it. I wanted to know "what flag?"

I still don't know what flag we're talking about. I'm not sure who the Eagles are or what they play, but whatever they do, they're apparently very good at it. From what I read, there are handballs and banana kicks involved, but that doesn't help me too much.

And this Norm Smith guy. I can only figure those medals bear his name for a good reason.

Hi,

I'll try and answer your questions, but first of all we post on Orble not Orbit and it's the AFL not the AFC.
AFL stands for the Australian Football League. There are 16 teams in the competition from all over Australia.
The West Coast Eagles are one of two teams from Western Australia and they just won this year's Premiership or "flag". That means they just won the Grand Final which is the equivalent of the Superbowl in America.
The best player in the Grand Final wins the Norm Smith Medal. Norm Smith was a legendary Australian Rules Football player and coach. He played in three premierships with the Melbourne Football club which is based in Victoria and is one of the oldest football clubs in the world as it was founded in 1858. He also went on to coach Melbourne to another 6 premierships or "flags".
I hope that helps, it would be difficult to explain all the rules, probably best if you read about it here or watch some footage of the West Coast Eagles here.

Hi Ian,

I really need to stop writing late at night. Maybe then I'd know where I'm posting and the difference between an 'L' and a 'C'.

Thank you so much for the overview, it was very helpful.

I kinda figured it was football, but needed to ask. Am I correct that your football is equivalent to our soccer?

No not at all, what you call soccer we also call soccer. Australian Rules Football is nothing like soccer, it's also nothing like American Football, but another game entirely.
You probably should watch some of it when you get a chance, you won't understand what's going on, but we love it!

Ohhhhhhhh. It appears I have a seriously lacking sports database. Ok, here's what I have so far: American soccer and Austrailian soccer are the same, American football and Austrailian football are different, the footballs and the soccer balls don't mix.

Yes, I think you have it figured out. Soccer balls are round and footballs are oval shaped.
