The Lousy Wardrobe Blues
September 14th 2006 22:57
Up until about five or six months ago, my wardrobe could only be kindly described as 'pitiful'. No, no, it wasn't a typical pitiful state. I mean I could have rented my closet to a homeless person. I had a winter dress and a summer dress (and I'd had those for too many years). I had a dress skirt (but no blouse nice enough to wear with it), and a denim skirt (and it was getting pretty tired). Consequently, I wore tee shirts, sweat shirts or flannel shirts with either my old raggedy jeans or my raggedy old jeans.
Then, as I've said, about five or six months ago I went through a massively positive and positively massive mind change. I'd always known I was a girl, but suddenly I wanted to dress like one. Fortunately for me and my paltry budget, I know how to sew.
Even though fabric shops seem to have gone the way of the shoe repair shops, I'm fortunate that there's a good one (fabric shop) in my area. It's nothing fancy and that's probably the reason the prices are so good. Sometimes, though, the best of prices can't help stretch a poor budget that needs to be spread with magic dust. So, if I wanted to have that new wardrobe, it was obvious that I'd have to get creative with my creativity.
I've found that a word in the right ears can net a helluva nice crop of very nice clothing. Oh, sure, they're often too big or out of style or just plain ugly, but something can always be done to them. And that's where I started to hone my alteration skills.
Right now I'm working on a black heavy cotton skirt. Frankly, it was nothing I'd wear if I didn't do something else with it, because it was plain to the point of being homely: black fabric, one black button on the waistband, zipper in the front, side pockets, one back pocket and a kick pleat. Hell, my old jeans had more character!</p<<p>In the next post, I'll tell you about what I'm doing to it.
Peace
