Sorry Vegetarians, I Like Organic Chicken

October 10th 2006 04:28
A big thing in the food industry for the past few years is organic food sales. That organic foods are sold is good, that they're sold for so much more money than other foods is mercenary. That foods should be free of things that end in 'cide' is good, that the industry is thumping it's chest about selling good food is shameful.

I had a teacher who once said "no paper will refuse ink". The statement always runs through my mind when it comes to advertising. Does slapping a great big "organic" all over the package, mean it's really organic? I don't think it always does.

The argument could be made that the test is in the taste. Again, my skeptical side speaks. Some of the so-called organic foods I've eaten had little, if any, difference in taste compared to regular food.

Frankly, it seems to me the only way to know that something's organic is to grow and preserve it yourself. No room for doubt there.

There is one exception, though. One big, hands down winner and it's ok to go the extra bucks for it once in a while (as far as I'm concerned). And that would be the chicken. Tried it, liked it, would buy it again.

For the rest of the foods the industry has put on its organic bandwagon, I'll grow it and stow it myself, thank you very much.

But I sure do like that chicken.

I had the fortune of living near a true organic grocery, where all the food is organic. It might cost twice as much, but I only ate a third as much to reach the satisfied stage, so I've always considered it cheaper ...

If i really wanted a fix of supermarket fruit & veg for nutritional purposes, I'd still go the economical way ... and eat their junk mail ...

Wow Homer.

Living near a real, live organic grocery must have been a real treat. I'd have enjoyed that. Alas, most of us are confined to the junk mail of the supermarkets.

what about organic eggs?

he problemw ith australian laws is that they don't exist in regards to organic foods.

As for organic eggs, it depends on which came first.

And Australia might be on to something. The rules of any country are written in cryptic and alien languages, so having none tends to add a bit of clarity.

Yes, a bit of clarity, as in no clarity whatsoever.

The thing is, without the rules there is no definition, hence you can stick a 'organic' lable on the chickens forhead and sell its eggs at an inflated price when in reality the chicken was kept ina small cage its whole entire life.

So true, so true. The buyer can be wary but can't be aware. Actually, it can be a case of "damned if you do, damned if you don't". Having no regulations makes the field wide open and the consumer at least knows to be sharp. Enacting regulatory laws doesn't necessary level the playing field because the consumer can be lulled into a security made false by the loopholes built in to pacify the merchants.

So what, exactly, is your definition of an "organic chicken"? Prove to me you have brains, not just a synthesized reality problem.

By organic we mean free range, by that we mean chickens that haven't been fed crap, what kind of crap? Crap thats not ideal for their health.

They also have to have access to walk around frely on the farm grounds for a set amount of time daily.

The idea is these chickens produce healthier eggs.

I don't have to be an expert, neither do you to understand that there is an ideal diet for chickens and others that are less than ideal. It is not up to us to decide what is ideal, but we know well enough that people are paying more money for eggs laid by healthier chickens

I suggest you visit a poultry farm (especially those in Yorkshire, England) and see how it's done PROPERLY. Disregard (I know it's almost impossible for you) the pictures you see on TV, and do a bit of research on your topic. You may very well be surprised, Mr. Chookfeeder.

I live in Australia so unles your willing ot pay for me to go I'm staying right here.

I have seen chicken farms, I'v seen both extremes with my own two eyes, not through TV. I know the difference.

Maybe you'v just been to the one that had free range eggs?

I suggested Yorkshire because they do it better than us. Suppliment feeding's the way to go, if you must know.

Suppliment? Suppliment with what exactly?

I don't have the time to give you the proper education. Like I suggested before, research, my man!

Well, Kate, I don't know where your "here" is, but I'm from Pennsylvania in the US. Not sure about the wild oats, though.

Oh. I'm in Maine. Wild Oats is like Whole Foods. I think that's the name of it. Do you have a Whole Foods there?

Yeah, I think so. But I'm not sure if there are any close to where I live.
