Sorry Vegetarians, I Like Organic Chicken
October 10th 2006 04:28
A big thing in the food industry for the past few years is organic food sales. That organic foods are sold is good, that they're sold for so much more money than other foods is mercenary. That foods should be free of things that end in 'cide' is good, that the industry is thumping it's chest about selling good food is shameful.
I had a teacher who once said "no paper will refuse ink". The statement always runs through my mind when it comes to advertising. Does slapping a great big "organic" all over the package, mean it's really organic? I don't think it always does.
The argument could be made that the test is in the taste. Again, my skeptical side speaks. Some of the so-called organic foods I've eaten had little, if any, difference in taste compared to regular food.
Frankly, it seems to me the only way to know that something's organic is to grow and preserve it yourself. No room for doubt there.
There is one exception, though. One big, hands down winner and it's ok to go the extra bucks for it once in a while (as far as I'm concerned). And that would be the chicken. Tried it, liked it, would buy it again.
For the rest of the foods the industry has put on its organic bandwagon, I'll grow it and stow it myself, thank you very much.
But I sure do like that chicken.

If i really wanted a fix of supermarket fruit & veg for nutritional purposes, I'd still go the economical way ... and eat their junk mail ...

Living near a real, live organic grocery must have been a real treat. I'd have enjoyed that. Alas, most of us are confined to the junk mail of the supermarkets.

he problemw ith australian laws is that they don't exist in regards to organic foods.

And Australia might be on to something. The rules of any country are written in cryptic and alien languages, so having none tends to add a bit of clarity.

The thing is, without the rules there is no definition, hence you can stick a 'organic' lable on the chickens forhead and sell its eggs at an inflated price when in reality the chicken was kept ina small cage its whole entire life.

They also have to have access to walk around frely on the farm grounds for a set amount of time daily.
The idea is these chickens produce healthier eggs.

I have seen chicken farms, I'v seen both extremes with my own two eyes, not through TV. I know the difference.
Maybe you'v just been to the one that had free range eggs?
